Overview
A high-powered rock 'n roll fusion of soulful ballads and devilish sea shanties. LISTEN
Part of the 2009-2010 MBT Season
Best known for energetic rock interpretations of traditional folk songs, which carry the Celtic, English, and French-inspired themes of Newfoundland ancestry, Great Big Sea’s repertoire includes soulful ballads, devilish sea shanties, and their own high-energy rock songs. The band is dedicated to sharing the music of their homeland with the world while experimenting with original music along the way. The music of Great Big Sea is the music of Newfoundland — their songs have been crafted by generations of sailors and river drivers who worked the rocky coasts and made music part of their heritage. “We are showmen and we live and die by our trade,” says lead singer Alan Doyle.
Hit singles like “Walk on the Moon,” “When I’m Up,” “Ordinary Day,” and “Captain Kidd” have helped the band develop a solid, loyal fan base. Several albums have been certified platinum or multi-platinum, and their highly-anticipated ninth album, Fortune’s Favour, was released to rave reviews in 2008. Since forming in 1993 the band has been nominated for 9 Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys) and has enjoyed several successful international tours to the U.S. and Europe. Mount Baker Theatre is privileged and thrilled to be able to offer these artists in what is, for them, an unusually intimate venue. This will be a rare treat for Bellingham.
