Wade through streams of harmony and eddies of acoustic rhythm as Grammy Award-nominated American indie folk duo The Milk Carton Kids deliver rootsy refreshment.
If the Smothers Brothers ever merged with Simon & Garfunkel, the result would likely be the highly entertaining and melodic duo Joey Ryan and Kenneth Pattengale. "Joey and I famously have an adversarial relationship," Pattengale quips playfully, but in fact the two are quite obviously in sync and perfectly partnered. Between the songs, Ryan masterfully plays his own straight man with an effortless stream of stoic (and hilarious) banter, while Pattengale beautifully tunes his guitar without missing a beat. As best stated in a review at FolkAlley.com, "their transcendent harmonies transport us momentarily out of ourselves, even as the duo’s humor reminds us of our foibles, counseling us to laugh at them."
Haley Heynderickx grew up in a religious household in Oregon, closely identifying with her Filipino roots, but also straddling multiple cultural identities. Now residing in Portland, her faith is not overt, but her introspection and continued struggle for self-actualization are easily accessible and relatable. Her latest album I Need to Start a Garden reflects these seemingly disparate elements. Through soft acoustic guitar picking and deftly accented trombone sighs, Heynderickx’s music immediately recalls folk music of the '60s and '70s mixed with a love of jazz radio. The music is a balance between exposing and protecting herself but her generosity of spirit remains the constant throughout.
