Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart | Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major K. 488
John Williams | Theme From “Jaws”
Claude Debussy | La Mer
This concert starts with Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Concerto for Birds and Orchestra “Cantus Arcticus,” a 1972 composition by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara. It is one of his best-known works and incorporates recordings of birdsong. Next is Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23, a nuanced score with an enchanting first movement, heartbreaking Adagio, and virtuosic third movement that has been described as an emotional rollercoaster. Another John Williams score is next, the Theme From “Jaws.” Built around a primordial rhythmic simplicity of three repeated bass notes that recall the heartbeat, this piece will be familiar to all and delights in its layers and complexities. Last is Debussy’s La Mer, described as a magical, ever-changing soundscape. As does the sea, La Mer runs the cosmic gamut from serene tranquility to terrifying, awe-inspiring power.
